Canton Volunteer Helps Makes Wishes Come True

Look for Kimberly Garland at the Canton Old Navy story Saturday.

On Saturday, Canton resident Kimberly Garland will be among hundreds of Michigan volunteers working at Old Navy stores to help make some very special wishes come true.

From 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on March 5 and 12, volunteers at 22 Old Navy locations in Michigan, including in Canton, will host the Jeans for Wishes campaign, benefitting the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The organization grants wishes for children facing life-threatening illnesses.

Garland got involved with Make-A-Wish Foundation six years ago.

"My godchild was a wish child," she said. "Unfortunately, she passed away, and after her experience, her family and friends decided to do the (fund-raising) walks."

Garland has gone a step farther; she just became a wish granter. "You work in teams. You meet with the family, you bring goodies for the wish child and any siblings," she said. "You're basically the contact person."

Volunteering is a family activity for Garland. She will be at the Canton Old Navy store on Michigan Ave. Saturday with her 12-year-old daughter Nina Pascua, a student at West Middle School in Plymouth. On March 12, she'll be there with her husband, Erik.

"I've been trying to get my husband to do the 300-mile bike tour," she said. "I'm slowly convincing him he can do this."

Last year, "Jeans for Wishes" volunteers raised about $25,000 in Michigan and $90,000 across Michigan, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin and North Dakota. This year, the Old Navy regions have set a fundraising goal of $125,000.

The Michigan group aims to fulfill these wishes:
